YSEP Compulsory Courses

Objective

Through this course, YSEP students from overseas partner universities and regular students of Tokyo Tech are expected to deepen their understanding of Japan and the Japanese society in comparison with other countries through lectures, discussions, presentations and visits to a relevant place.

In the first half of the course, lectures will be given on the characteristics of Japanese culture, society, education and history. Students will discuss some key topics related with the lectures and visit an elementary school to see the actual education in Japan. In the last part of the course, students will be divided into several groups and make a group presentation on ‘Discovery of Japan,’ assuming they are the special correspondents dispatched from some international media to cover a hot topic on Japan. They have to choose a topic, explore the background causes of the phenomena and give a presentation.

Course participants are encouraged to exchange with the classmates and to understand the other values and way of thinking than their own during this course.

Contents (tentative schedule)

1. Dec. 5: Outline of the course. Tips to understand the Japanese culture and communication style
2. Dec. 12: Characteristics and current issues of Japanese society and education
3. Dec. 19: Study Visit to Chisetsu Elementary School (From 10:30 am to 13:30 pm)
4. Dec. 26: Overview of Japanese history and Meiji Restoration
5. Jan. 9: Modernization and issues during Meiji period
6. Jan. 16: Presentation: Discovery of Japan (1) (2) (3)
7. Jan. 23: Presentation: Discovery of Japan (4) (5) (6)

Assessment criteria and method

Understanding of classes 40%, Presentation 40%, Final report 20%

1. Class attendance including school visit: attendance is expected at all class meetings. Those who come to the class 30 minutes after its start or leave 30 minutes before its end will receive only half of the attendance points.
2. Presentation: Students are requested to make a group presentation on ‘Discovery of Japan,’ assuming they are the special correspondents dispatched from some international media to cover an interesting topic on Japan. They have to choose a topic, explore the background causes of the phenomena and give a group presentation in front of the other students and guest audience, followed by Q& A and discussion (each presentation should be within 20minutes).
3. 3. Final Report: Each student is requested to submit a final report in about 250 words in English related with the part which he/she analyzed in the group presentation. Please send the report with the title “TOJ Final Report _ your student number and name” by Jan. 23 to the following e-mail address:

  Late submission will decrease your report points.
4. Substitute report: If you cannot participate in the visit to the Chisetsu Elementary School you will be requested to write a short report on ‘Education of Japan in comparison with other countries’ in more than 200 words in English and send it to the above e-mail address by Dec. 26. Late submission will decrease your report points.

Objective

This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the actual systems of Japanese companies and industries through study tours and a series of lectures given by professional company staff.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to

1. deepen their understanding of the Japanese industrial and social system
2. understand the working environment, culture and required communication/language skills of several companies/organizations in Japan
3. understand the actual technical systems of Japanese companies and public organizations

Course flow

This course consists of three study tours and six lectures.

Student attendance is expected at the briefing session, at least two study tours and three lectures.

SJCI course students are advised to participate in Study Tours 2 and 3. The first tour (Visit to Hitachi GE Nuclear Energy) can accommodate a limited number of students since the other course (CSJI) students have priority to participate in it. . (Note: To participate the study tour 1, the student should attend the first lecture by Dr. Mochida and make the registration to the tour.)

Participating students are encouraged to ask questions or express their observations to the lecturers or staff during the QA session in each lecture/tour.

Students must submit a short report of designated format at the end of each lecture and a report after each tour.

Assessment Criteria and Method

1. Class attendance: attendance is expected at briefing session, at least two study tours and three lectures.
2. Short reports after each lecture: Students are requested to write a short report (quiz) by the given sheet just after each lecture.
3. Reports on the study tours: Students are requested to submit a report after each study tour. The length of report on the tour should be in one A4 page in English and be submitted to the TA within one week after each tour.　It should be sent with the title “Report _ the tour place_ your student number and name” to the following e-mail address:

Note: When you send your report by e-mail, TA will send you the confirmation of its receipt. If you don’t receive the confirmation within a week, you are requested to contact the teacher since the report might be missing.

Others

Please keep the following rules and manner when you visit a factory.

(Rule 1) Visiting a factory
1. Please put on low-heeled shoes. Sandals and mules are inappropriate for safety reasons.
2. Participants are recommended to wear long pants/slacks and bring long sleeve shirts/jackets and socks with you for safety reasons (you might be requested to change to safety shoes in some factories).

(Rule 2) When you are in a plant or a factory

Taking a picture is prohibited unless you are given specific permission.
Cell phones should not be used while walking in the factory.
Please do not move close to the staff while they are operating.
Please be careful about the trucks, locomotives and so on in the plant.
Please follow the designated line on the ground of the factory.
Please do not touch the products, unless you are told you are allowed to.
Please do not put your hands in your pockets while walking.

Condition for taking this course:

Due to the passenger capacity of the bus, the number of students who can take this class is limited. The selection of the class participants will be conducted in the briefing session.
